England v West Indies: Andrew Strauss must cope better with the short ball, says Geoffrey Boycott

It was a good win for England, although they had to work harder than we expected. Full marks to Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Marlon Samuels and Kemar Roach for giving England a little bit of a scare.

But, quite frankly, I expect England to go on and comfortably win this series 3-0. The reason for that is England are a very good side. Their strength is their bowling. Stuart Broad’s performance was outstanding.

When you think our best bowler for the last few years, Jimmy Anderson, kept beating the bat and couldn’t get a wicket but we still controlled the game, it shows how much strength England have in depth.

And don’t forget queuing up behind this lot are the youngster, Steven Finn, who has pace and aggression, and Graham Onions, who I would have picked to play on this slow Lord’s surface.

Everyone is going to be happy that the captain, Andrew Strauss, made runs. When he reached his hundred you could see the relief and delight in Andrew’s face.

Although he played nice and straight, when the ball is short he still has a problem. He doesn’t use his feet. He doesn’t move his back foot back and across.

I am a cricket coach, albeit at a low standard of play, ie Sunday cricket. But i coach batsmen to leave anything banged in half way down unless it’s a 20 over game. There is NO advantage in defending a ball with the bat if it’s 5 feet off the ground. Watching Bairstow, Strauss and many other test match players getting into trouble by trying to fend off a ball near their throat is astonishing. Why are the coaches not telling them to simply leave the ball and let the bowler tire himself out? The best result will be a lucky run somewhere. More likely you will get caught out or it will drop onto the stumps. Just leave them alone and frustrate the bowler.

The test for Andrew Strauss will indeed be the South African fast bowlers in the near future.
I hope he and the rest of the English team can give Australia a very hard time.
